Miyakojima Burials

Miyakojima is known for having a history of ancestor worship. It might be due to this that history of burials on Miyakojima is very interesting. Until the 1960’s the original system of burial preparation was used. Bodies were carried by loved ones in the community to the burial location, which are large above ground tombs that are used by a family. Apparently a potential groom was interested in the size of the bride’s family’s tomb. After about 7 to 8 years the body was taken out, the bones cleaned, and then placed into a large ceramic container.

At this point in time, people are usually cremated.
